In Conversation with Christopher Dewdney

In December of last year, Christopher Dewdney, author of Acquainted with the Night, had an opportunity to see an early showing of World After Dark in studio. Here's what he had to say:

S: How does it feel to have your book reimagined as a dance work?

C: The intimate experience of having my book converted into choreography was something I was completely unprepared for. Extraordinary.  Any skepticism I had completely vanished with that performance.

S: What were some of your early inspirations for writing Acquainted with the Night?

C: I have always had a passion for night, though perhaps my fascination with
nocturnal animals tipped the balance. Even when I was a very young I found
night creatures strangely beautiful and fascinating, I wanted to join them in
this other dark realm. My parents lived beside a forested ravine system and on
summer nights I would sometimes walk through the dark forest without a
flashlight to fine-tune my night vision.

S: After seeing a run of the show in studio last December, what are your first impressions?

C: Watching the performance of World After Dark was quite an emotional experience for me. To see Acquainted with the Night translated into dance was amazing, but what really astonished me was the accuracy and detail of the show. The dancers really captured the core themes of my book;  strangeness and beauty, awe and reverence.

S: What do you want audiences to know about World After Dark?

C: That night is a not an absence, not a time-out, but a rich, enchanting world
that can offer us so much more than we know.
